You're Not Alone

If I were so inclined, I could litter my “Links” section with nothing but You Tube videos regarding school bullying. Rest assured, that is not my intention.

In my first link to a You Tube video regarding school bullying, I chose one that I felt nicely complemented my story in that its focus was on what school bullying entails, while my story’s focus is on how such victims feel. I have chosen another video to link to because it is similar in focus to my story; so similar, in fact, that the thought had crossed my mind that the person who had written the original song performed in the video concerning school bullying had read my story, and at my site, and had been inspired by them.

To that effect, I contacted the gentleman who had produced the video and had written the song (both the beautiful, haunting melody and the profound and touching lyrics) to inquire if that had been the case. He had been kind enough to reply and assured me that that hadn’t been the case. On the contrary, he said, many people who had been victims of school bullying during their childhoods had told him how much the song had hit home to them as well.

“It’s funny,” he wrote back, “everybody who went through what we did thinks their situation was unique to them. But when they hear my song, they learn differently.”

As I indicated on the Welcome Page of my website, my purpose in having written “Pride’s Prison” was not to point out what everyone already knows; that school bullying is a severe and ongoing problem for some kids. The point was to warn parents about what their child might be experiencing and hiding from them out of pride and an unwarranted sense of shame.

Nothing I—or anyone!—can say, write or do will ever eliminate the presence among us of sadists of all stripes: bullies, certain criminals and the Hitlers and Stalins of this world This must be understood.
