HBO and the Tourette Syndrome Association teamed up to produce an outstanding documentary concerning actual kids afflicted with Tourette's Syndrome. It was released in 2005 and is entitled I Have Tourette's but Tourette's Doesn't Have Me.

The documentary focuses on the everyday lives of several youngsters with TS and attempts to refute the "freak show" image that Bruce Holtgren laments in his superb newspaper editorial referenced on the previous page. Indeed, my only slight reservation concerning this professionally produced feature is that it might seem somewhat hyperbolic. It seems obvious that the production team and TSA sought out the most photogenic and accomplished youngsters with TS that they could find as subjects.

Of course, not all youngsters with TS are budding virtuoso pianists, state karate champions, ballerinas or are fluent in more than one language; nor do they all look like child actors that teenage girls moon over in teen magazines. Still, the point is valid that having TS does not make a youngster "a whole 'nother person" as one youngster in the feature saliently puts it. They are normal kids in every way, except they share one particular problem in common that differs from the general population. The documentary attempts to show that the affliction is far and away not the defining element of people who suffer with it.

Additionally, the DVD contains excellent discussions by various mental health therapists concerning TS and problems kids afflicted with it face as a result, such as school bullying. I wholeheartedly recommend this brilliant documentary!
