We had a great time playing tackle after school. We won, but I didn’t catch any touchdowns this time. After I got my homework done, I watched The Monroes even though it means missing The Beverley Hillbillies. I like both, but The Monroes is really interesting. They have twin boys about my age on it or maybe just a year older or so. They’re real life twins. Big Twin and his little sister got kidnapped tonight by bad guys , but they were all right at the end. The boys who play the twins have the same last name we do! We’re not related, though.
I’m pretty close to finishing the first half of Foundation and Empire. I sure hope the Foundation wins against that bad general guy!
[Editor’s note: the company that produced the Palmer Penmanship method for handwriting (very popular at that time and for many years before) used to issue awards for the best handwriting amongst students from samples sent to them. It was a marketing gimmick as well as a way to promote effort amongst students for the method.]
October 13, 1966, Thursday: Denny Ryan was back today and that made my day miserable. Without their leader, O’Brien and the rest of them stayed away from me yesterday. Today at recess was worse than ever. Sr. Mary Peter came back into the room sooner than usual, and they were still around me making fun of me and pushing me. She said, “What’s going on here?” Then she walked over to me, after they went back to their seats, and asked me what I was doing.
I was real nervous and all I could say was “Nothing, sister.”
She got real mad and said, “Nothing? Who were you bothering, sneak?” Then she slapped me and when I bent over because it hurt so much, she pushed me and I fell down. I thought I was going to be sick right there in the room in front of everyone. I was shaking in my desk for awhile after that.
Home at lunch, I guess I wasn’t as good an actor as I usually am. Mom asked me, “What’s wrong, Bobby? You’re hardly eating anything,” and it was a hamburger and French fries, my favorite. I had to tell her something, so I said I wasn't feeling well. I wasn’t really trying to get out of school, but she told me to stay home for the afternoon just in case I was coming down with something. She gave Timmy a note to give to Sr. Mary. She didn’t even take my temperature. She just felt my forehead. I guess because I wasn’t eating my favorite lunch she just believed me. Maybe she gets lonesome sometimes home alone all day since grandmom moved out. Click to continue:
