Diary of a bullied school kid....
Per the request by some, the boy in front being taunted closely resembles Bobby of "Pride's Prison."
(From an Irish newspaper article on school bullying.)
You were never alone.
**************
In January of 2006, I was privileged to have my short story,
"Pride's Prison," published on the E-zine Bewildering Stories, published by Mr. Jerry Wright and edited by Dr. Donald Webb, two of the finest gentlemen within the literary community. I was further honored to have my story chosen for The Best of the Quarter Anthology presented by the online publication.
My point in writing this story was not that some kids endure profund bullying at school. Everybody already knows that. The point is why such kids so often react to it as they do; as my young character does. It is intended as a cautionary admonition to parents as to what their child might be hiding from them: and why. Thus, if even one parent should read the story and begin to ask the right questions of his or her child, or of others, and thus spare one child unnecessary misery, then it would have been worth writing. The once virtually unheard of phenomenon of child suicide has become tragically less rare in contemporary times.
Read my review of Bullyproof Your Child for Life, by Joel Haber, Ph.D., with Jenna Glatzer.
This is the best book on the subject of school bullying I've yet read. Dr. Haber offers an incisive analysis of school bullying from both the victim's and perpetrator's perspectives. It includes helpful remedial advice.
